Album Review — Now is the Time, by Perpetual Etude

Filed under: entertainment, Fun, Listening, Media, Reviews — Tags: , , — mikewb1971 @ 9:52 PM (21:52)

Band: Perpetual Etude

Album Title: Now is the Time

Release Date: Friday, 15 October 2021

One Liner Summary: Perpetual Etude definitely lives up to their stated intention — to bring back the best of 80s hard rock and metal.

Review: Now is the Time made me feel as though I had been transported back to 1985-1987. It reminded me of Yngwie Malmsteen’s Trilogy, along with Dokken’s Tooth and Nail and Under Lock and Key

They do deliver on what they say they’re shooting for — blistering, melodic guitars and keyboards, melodic vocals (see below).

I for one am hoping to hear more from Perpetual Etude, and to catch one of their live shows should they come to the States.

Rating (Out of 5): 5

Genres: Hard Rock, Metal, Neo Classical Heavy Metal

Record Label: Sound Pollution

Pre-order links — When I clicked the “Pre-Order” links on the Bandcamp site, all I got were these Javascript popup boxes, and there was NO URL available that I could copy and paste here for direct ordering or pre-ordering ANYTHING. REALLY aggravating, but this might be a Bandcamp thing, and entirely out of the band’s control.

For Fans Of: Alcatrazz, Cinderella, Dokken, Europe, Krokus, Leatherwolf, Yngwie Malmsteen, Night Ranger, Van Halen

  1. I’ve Got the Power
  2. Show Me

From their Bandcamp site

Perpetual Etude formed in early 2019, as a project by Magnus Mild.

The aim was to write music with firm roots in the 80s hard rock / metal genre, where there were lots of guitar heroes, more solos than ever before and big focus on melodies. Influenced by that genre since childhood. Magnus wanted to focus on that sound and feel, build on it and take it one step further. When he later met up with vocalist Kristian Fyhr, Magnus had a vision: now is the time to do something about all those song ideas, now is the time to make something from it. Thus, the name of the album — Now is the Time. The songs depict the journeys in life, covering everything from finding true love to the loss of a close one. This is also symbolized on the album cover (by Gustavo Sazes), by a broken hourglass with good and bad memories coming out of the cracks. To learn from what has happened in the past and move on. The journey began to find the right persons for the job, to form a true band, and here we are now, finally, with the first Perpetual Etude album. Packed with blazing guitar and keyboard solos, fast and heavy riffing and very melodic vocals.

The guitar heroism of the 80s is back! Perpetual Etude was formed in 2019 by Magnus Mild with the sole goal to bring back the best of the heavy metal of the 80s. Influenced by the genre when growing up, Magnus teamed up with members from NorthTale, Dionysys, Nation, Shadowquest as well as Göran Edman on “Sail Away” to complete the vision. The result is the best of a whole decade in the astounding debut Now Is The Time, an album filled with blazing guitar riffs, keyboard solos and catchy choruses.

Concert Review — Overkill at the Sunshine Theater

Filed under: entertainment, Events, Fun, Life, Reviews, Sports / Recreation — Tags: , , , , , — mikewb1971 @ 4:42 PM (16:42)

For what it’s worth, I bought my ticket online over two months ago —

As late as 2006, I had to drive around Albuquerque, looking for Ticketmaster sellers [1]. HoldMyTicket is so, so much BETTER than Ticketmaster.

Here’s the event poster (had to convert it from .webp format, as WordPress doesn’t like that one [2]) from the Sunshine Theater’s site [3]

Leading up to Overkill, Exhorder put out a good effort. Here’s their official site, Facebook Page, and YouTube channel.

Here’s Overkill’s set list from last night:

In the middle of “Rotten to the Core,” Mike Trujillo, former host of Zero Hour Squared on the now-defunct (?) Channel 27, stopped by, said “Hi,” and we shook hands. Nothing like meeting old friends at these shows.

This was the fourth time I’ve seen Overkill live [4], and as on the previous occasions, they didn’t disappoint. I am hoping for fifth, sixth, and seventh times, wherever I might end up.

Overkill — Last Man Standing

[Verse 1]
They’re lining up in columns
They’re lining up in pairs
They’re lining up around the globe
They line up everywhere
Without reservation
Without cause to care
Fuck the complication
Last man standing
Heard the blowing siren
Heard boots upon the ground
Heard the brave in unison
Hear their engines pound
As God will be our witness
And evil is commanding
Fuck the abdication
Last man standing

[Chorus]
Last man standing, last to fall
Last man rise to take it all
Last define the best of what we do
Last man standing, last to fall
Last man rise to take it all
Last man in to tighten up the screw
Get in the mix and fight
Fight

[Verse 2]
The fever turned to anger
The anger turned to hate
The hate became the reason
In the hands of fate
Without reservation
Pause to dedicate
All our admiration
Last man standing
Stronger by the dozen
Stronger by the score
Stronger by the thousands
With a cry of war
As God will be our witness
And loyalty demanding
Fuck obliteration
Last man standing

[Chorus]
Last man standing, last to fall
Last to rise and take it all
Last define the best of what we do
Last man standing, last to fall
Last to rise and take it all
Last man in to tighten up the screw
Get in the mix and fight
Fight

[Bridge]
All our footsteps have taken us here
To the place that we all can call home
And all of our hearts sing together in what we bring
All in a place we call home

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus/Outro]
Last man standing, last to fall
Last to rise and take it all
Last define the best of what we do
Last man standing, last to fall
Last to rise and take it all
Last man in to tighten up the screw
Get in the mix and …
Get in the mix and …
Get in the mix and fight
Fight
Fight
Fight
Fight

Y&T — Hang ‘Em High

Walk like a warrior through the shadows of the night
Shatter the silence with our screams
Like a tiger, move in for the kill
We’re gonna get what we need

We stand together, feel it closing in
Electric shock through our veins
Power of numbers cannot be denied
Let’s stand up and show how we feel

Hang em high, band together
Hang em high through the night
Hang em high, band together
And we always will survive
Reach for the sky

Soldier of fortune, always on the run
Your enemy lies within
You must escape from the shackles in your mind
Stand like a warrior and win

Join our ranks, there ain’t no losers here
As long as we never divide
We are a force so strong we never have to run
Let’s stand up and show how we feel

Hang em high, band together
Hang em high through the night
Hang em high, band together
And we always will survive
Reach for the sky

Walk like a warrior through the shadows of the night
Shatter the silence with our screams
Power of numbers cannot be denied
Let’s stand up and show how we feel

Hang em high, band together
Hang em high through the night
Hang em high, band together
And we always will survive
Reach for the sky

Twisted Sister — Lookin’ Out For #1

Filed under: entertainment, Listening, Media, Principles — Tags: , , — mikewb1971 @ 10:52 PM (22:52)

They always told me I must try to be
Like everyone in the nation
Go with the flow, remember me is we
There must be no deviation
Well, now I think that I’ll go my own way
I’ve got my own point of view
I just don’t care what other people say
I do what I wanna do

You know that I’m ready
I’m ready to rock
You know that I’m ready
I’m ready to rock
Gonna rock

I’m lookin’ out for number one / number one
I’m lookin’ out for number one / number one
I’m lookin’ out for number one / number one
I’m lookin’ out for number one / number one

The time has come for you to make a stand
You’ve got to do things your own way
Forget about the style, forget the brand
‘Cause every dog has his own day
It doesn’t matter what the others think
What counts is do you like you?
You think you’re drownin’ but you’ll never sink
Just do what you wanna do

You better get ready, get ready to rock
You better get ready, get ready to rock
Gotta rock

You know that we’re ready, we’re ready to rock
You know that we’re ready, we’re ready to rock
Gonna rock

We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for number one / number one
We’re lookin’ out for, out for number one
Yeah

Twisted Sister — I Am (I’m Me)

Filed under: entertainment, Listening, Principles — Tags: , , — mikewb1971 @ 10:25 PM (22:25)

Who are you to look down
At what I believe?
I’m on to your thinking
And how you deceive
Well, you can’t abuse me
I won’t stand no more
Yes, I know the reasons
Yes, I know the score

I am, and I’ll be
I will, you’ll see
I am, and I’ll be
I am, I’m me

How I tried to please you
Live the way you said
Do the things that you do
Like the living dead
Then the truth it hit me
Got me off my knees
It’s my life I’m living
I’ll live as I please

I am, and I’ll be
I will, you’ll see
I am, and I’ll be
I am, I’m me

Now’s the time to stand tall
Start your life anew
Freedom lies in your heart
Now’s the time for you

I am, and I’ll be
I will, you’ll see
I am, and I’ll be
I am, I’m me

I am, I’m me
I am, I’m me
Can’t you see? Can’t you see?
I’m me, I’m me, me, me, me, me
I am I’m me
I am I’m me
Can’t you see?, can’t you see?
I’m me, I’m me, I’m me
I am, I’m me
I am, I’m me
Can’t you see that I’m me
I’m me, I’m me, look at me
I am, I’m me
I am, I’m me

Ozzy Osbourne — Crazy Babies

Filed under: entertainment, Fun, Listening, Media, Viewing — Tags: , , — mikewb1971 @ 11:43 PM (23:43)

Crazy . . . Babies . . .

Crazy babies never say die
Born to live on a permanent high,
Flying high above the world below,
They’d better come down soon
Or everyone will know
Just why

Nobody’s gonna change them, change them,
They’ve gone over the top
Nobody’s gonna tame them, tame them,
They’re never gonna stop

Walk that walk, ooooo
Talk that talk, ooooo
Walk that walk, ooooo
Talk that talk, ooooo

Crazy . . . Babies . . .

When they were born
They were born to be wild
Some say I’m another Devil’s child
Crazy babies in a world of their own,
I am a crazy babe,
So you’d better leave me alone tonight

Nobody’s gonna change me, change me
I’m gonna do this ’til I die,
Nobody’s gonna tame me, tame me,
So you better not try

Walk that walk, ooooo
Talk that talk, ooooo
Walk that walk, ooooo
Talk that talk, ooooo

Crazy . . . Babies . . .

No use talking ’bout if they’ll last,
Where they’re goin’
Or about their past
They’re just the result of our society,
So frustrated
Just like you and me
That’s right

Nobody’s gonna change them, change them,
They’ve gone over the top
Nobody’s gonna tame them, tame them,
They’re never gonna stop

Walk that walk,
Talk that talk,
Walk that walk,
Talk that talk

Tim Keller’s Mayoral Theme Song?

That song, of course, should be “Breaking The Law” by Judas Priest.

But hey, “he acted in good faith” so it doesn’t really matter, does it?

Helloween — Another Shot of Life [Video with Lyrics]

I am no stranger to darkness
I am no stranger to pain
I had to suffer ’till I went insane
Learning from pain and from heartaches
How to forgive and forget
Never give up ’cause life goes on again

Pushed all around I can’t take it no more
Don’t tell me how to behave
Won’t hide away I can make it for sure
I will survive
I will live my own life

Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
I played my pride — There’s no place to hide for me
Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
Shot of life — ‘Till I find my destiny

If you feel strange and emotional
Carrying the weight of the world
Open your soul and let the spirit in
It’s not the end of the rainbow
It’s not the end of the line
Your time will come and you will rise again

Pushed all around I can’t take it no more
Don’t tell me how to behave
Won’t hide away I can make it for sure
I will survive
I will live my own life

Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
I played my pride — There’s no place to hide for me
Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
Shot of life — ‘Till I find my destiny

Shot of life
Shot of life
Shot of life
Shot of life

I’m leaving all my pain away
My sorrows are not here to stay
Tomorrow comes another day
Another hope, another try

Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
I played my pride — There’s no place to hide for me
Shot of life — I will take another shot of life
Shot of life — ‘Till I find my destiny
