After installing Linux Mint 17.2 on my Asus K54L laptop, I logged into Google, and got the following alert message at my Gmail account:
Then I logged into Facebook, and received this alert message:
Here’s the funny thing — I logged into both accounts using Mozilla Firefox.
So why am I getting messages saying that I used Safari on Mac OS X?
For the record, I haven’t touched anything Apple or Mac since April, 1994, when I had to use a Leatherman multi-tool to pull my floppy disk out of the drive slot when the “Eject” command (⌘-E) didn’t work after repeated tries.
After installing Linux Mint on the laptop, I launched Firefox, and installed the following add-ons to Firefox —
The costs of this?

Yesterday, I popped the live DVD that came included with Linux Format #201. Bundled on that disc was antiX 15-V.
First impressions —
Is antiX a keeper as Linux Mint seems to be? I’m not sure, but am willing to pursue further use.

Tonight I disassembled this old-style Western Digital external hard drive I’ve had sitting around for ages (model WD1200B008[1]). It turns out that the only drivers available for this one are for Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP – NOTHING for Windows 7. Nor does it connect to my Tosh Satellite C55D with Linux Mint 15[2] installed. Really aggravating.
So after I took it apart, I found that the unit is nothing more than a standard internal-type hard drive with a power port and USB port attached to it, so you can connect it to your desktop or laptop. Which means I can use it as an internal drive for the desktop I’m in the process of rebuilding.
Only one “problem” – there’s some data on the drive that I want to recover before I load an operating system onto it.
Solution – after I put the system together (ETA for that is presently mid-December), I’ll run LM 16 from whatever DVD drive I end up installing in the system as a live DVD[3], extract the data, and then have fun.
The plan is for DT2 to end up with a 16 GB solid-state drive[4] in the “master” drive slot, with this 120 GB drive from the external unit as a “slave” drive (along with another 20 GB drive I have laying around).
Or I could use the 20 GB unit as the “master” drive, and get the job done a little faster.
Using the 20 GB drive in the “master” slot, then all I need is a new motherboard (form factor micro-ATX) with chipset and fan, power supply (about ∅40) and a DVD drive.

First, let me start off by saying that I posted a suggestion to the Featured Questions page, and the staff at Xanga posted as one of the daily questions.
WAY COOL! (This is my first time being featured like this, so cut me some slack here, OK?)
Anyway, to answer my own question —
In 1989, I started as a computer user with a Tandy 1000 series computer, using MS-DOS 2.0, if I recall correctly. Back then, Tandy was a part of Radio Shack, but not fully integrated into it, and as such, had its own brand name for computers. With the Tandy 1000 series came their own version of a graphical user interface (GUI), which operated mostly from the keyboard. It was using that system that I learned the ins and outs of the DOS command-line interface — copying and deleting files, etc.
My experience with Windows started in July, 1998, when I bought a modern-style PC. I learned the hard way what a pain in the ass Windows can be from the beginning, as the guy who sold it to me installed a bootleg copy of Windows 95 on it. I had some problems there, and tried “fixing” them by upgrading to Windows 98. When that didn’t work, I ponied up for a full edition of that disaster-on-a-CD-ROM.
Fast-forward to 2001 — I bought a copy of Windows 2000 Pro at the local Staples, and it beat the crap out of Win-98. (I still have that CD, by the way.)
Now I’m using a combination of Windows XP and Ubuntu. I’ve played around with Knoppix, OpenSuse and Suse Enterprise Desktop, while using a version of Red Hat at work for the past four years.
