Album Review — Now is the Time, by Perpetual Etude

Filed under: entertainment, Fun, Listening, Media, Reviews — Tags: , , — mikewb1971 @ 9:52 PM (21:52)

Band: Perpetual Etude

Album Title: Now is the Time

Release Date: Friday, 15 October 2021

One Liner Summary: Perpetual Etude definitely lives up to their stated intention — to bring back the best of 80s hard rock and metal.

Review: Now is the Time made me feel as though I had been transported back to 1985-1987. It reminded me of Yngwie Malmsteen’s Trilogy, along with Dokken’s Tooth and Nail and Under Lock and Key

They do deliver on what they say they’re shooting for — blistering, melodic guitars and keyboards, melodic vocals (see below).

I for one am hoping to hear more from Perpetual Etude, and to catch one of their live shows should they come to the States.

Rating (Out of 5): 5

Genres: Hard Rock, Metal, Neo Classical Heavy Metal

Record Label: Sound Pollution

Pre-order links — When I clicked the “Pre-Order” links on the Bandcamp site, all I got were these Javascript popup boxes, and there was NO URL available that I could copy and paste here for direct ordering or pre-ordering ANYTHING. REALLY aggravating, but this might be a Bandcamp thing, and entirely out of the band’s control.

For Fans Of: Alcatrazz, Cinderella, Dokken, Europe, Krokus, Leatherwolf, Yngwie Malmsteen, Night Ranger, Van Halen

From their Bandcamp site

Perpetual Etude formed in early 2019, as a project by Magnus Mild.

The aim was to write music with firm roots in the 80s hard rock / metal genre, where there were lots of guitar heroes, more solos than ever before and big focus on melodies. Influenced by that genre since childhood. Magnus wanted to focus on that sound and feel, build on it and take it one step further. When he later met up with vocalist Kristian Fyhr, Magnus had a vision: now is the time to do something about all those song ideas, now is the time to make something from it. Thus, the name of the album — Now is the Time. The songs depict the journeys in life, covering everything from finding true love to the loss of a close one. This is also symbolized on the album cover (by Gustavo Sazes), by a broken hourglass with good and bad memories coming out of the cracks. To learn from what has happened in the past and move on. The journey began to find the right persons for the job, to form a true band, and here we are now, finally, with the first Perpetual Etude album. Packed with blazing guitar and keyboard solos, fast and heavy riffing and very melodic vocals.

The guitar heroism of the 80s is back! Perpetual Etude was formed in 2019 by Magnus Mild with the sole goal to bring back the best of the heavy metal of the 80s. Influenced by the genre when growing up, Magnus teamed up with members from NorthTale, Dionysys, Nation, Shadowquest as well as Göran Edman on “Sail Away” to complete the vision. The result is the best of a whole decade in the astounding debut Now Is The Time, an album filled with blazing guitar riffs, keyboard solos and catchy choruses.

Concert Review — Overkill at the Sunshine Theater

Filed under: entertainment, Events, Fun, Life, Reviews, Sports / Recreation — Tags: , , , , , — mikewb1971 @ 4:42 PM (16:42)

For what it’s worth, I bought my ticket online over two months ago —

As late as 2006, I had to drive around Albuquerque, looking for Ticketmaster sellers [1]. HoldMyTicket is so, so much BETTER than Ticketmaster.

Here’s the event poster (had to convert it from .webp format, as WordPress doesn’t like that one [2]) from the Sunshine Theater’s site [3]

Leading up to Overkill, Exhorder put out a good effort. Here’s their official site, Facebook Page, and YouTube channel.

Here’s Overkill’s set list from last night:

In the middle of “Rotten to the Core,” Mike Trujillo, former host of Zero Hour Squared on the now-defunct (?) Channel 27, stopped by, said “Hi,” and we shook hands. Nothing like meeting old friends at these shows.

This was the fourth time I’ve seen Overkill live [4], and as on the previous occasions, they didn’t disappoint. I am hoping for fifth, sixth, and seventh times, wherever I might end up.

Eric July Calls Out Marvel for Writing Laziness

Eric July, frontman for Backwordz, recently called out the Marvel “bullpen” for laziness and sloppiness with their endless rebooting[1] of their characters and storylines —

I agree with Mr. July 1000 percent, and have said so several times in the past.

To date, the ONLY reboot that significantly improved upon the source material was Ronald D. Moore’s 2003 remake of the Battlestar Galactica franchise.

Compare and contrast Marvel’s incessant rebooting with Star Trek in 1986.

Gene Roddenberry wanted to bring the franchise back to television, but couldn’t afford the salaries that William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley could command. Rather than casting new actors in the established roles, he created a new slate of previously unknow characters, and thus Star Trek: The Next Generation was born.

Star Trek: The Original Series lasted three years (1966-1969) in its original run, while The Next Generation (1987-1994), Deep Space Nine (1993-1999), and Voyager (1995-2001) ran for seven seasons each, followed by Enterprise (2001-2005), which ran for four seasons.

Thus, I think it’s fair to say that while rebooting your franchise may seem like the thing to do at the moment, not doing so may give your franchise a longer, richer life.

The 2020 DNC Presidential “Debates”

For those of you who have been carefully watching the DNC-sponsored “debates” between various “presidential candidates,” trying to figure out which of them has the most “innovative” “solutions” to America’s “problems,” let me sum them all up for you with a picture —

The DNC and its affiliates, as they’ve been since 1970. [Image H/T Stephen Carville]

As far as any of these . . . individuals . . . is concerned, your life, liberty, money, property, and pursuit(s) of happiness don’t belong to you at all.

NONE of these . . . persons . . . displays any evidence of caring about your individual rights, privileges or immunities in the slightest.

Rather, in their minds, your life, liberty, money, property, and pursuit(s) of happiness are theirs, to take away, to give to others, to use as they see fit, or to destroy, at their arbitrary and capricious whim.

In their minds, your individual rights, privileges or immunities aren’t yours at all in any way, but theirs, to be granted to you or taken away from you at their discretion.

In the end, tuning in to these cretins and idiots is a total waste of time, electricity, and bandwidth, in my opinion.

Once Upon a Time, I Proposed a Skit . . . .

Filed under: Dark Side, entertainment, Humor, Media, Politics, Principles, Viewing — Tags: , , , , , , — mikewb1971 @ 8:54 AM (08:54)

Back in the 1990s, a few of us Old Drunken Old Irrvelivent types were talking about potential skits for our public-access television presence (The Weekly Sedition, New Mexico’s Consumer Advocate, etc.).

One of the ideas that I came up with was to have two people sitting side by side at a table or desk, wearing black BDU-type shirts, black balaclava-type face masks, and black K-pot-type helmets. Something like this (minus the embroidery, web gear, weapons and chest plate) —

On the front of one of the helmets, there would be painted a rather conspicuous donkey. On the other, an elephant.

While sitting there on camera, our two TV stars would crack jokes and reminisce about how much fun it was to go after church groups, people wanting to be left alone, gun show promoters, and other “undesirables,” using lethal force, explosives, armored vehicles, and airstrikes, etc.

Such a skit might be considered “tasteless” (especially by the “You can’t say that!” crowd), but seriously, folks? How can signing off on such behavior, even implicitly, in the most roundabout fashion, be considered “tasteful” ?
