[LPNM] Supporting Future Candidates

Filed under: Networking, Organizing, Politics, Principles — Tags: , , , , , — mikewb1971 @ 11:17 PM (23:17)

I think that for next year’s State Convention, I will sponsor a resolution that for the LPNM to consider endorsing any presidential candidate(s), that those candidate(s) must first have attended two (2) Libertarian Party events within the last calendar year.

UPDATE 1 — also include vice-presidential candidate(s).

For presidential and VP candidates, 2 LP events in general.

For statewide candidates in New Mexico, LPNM events.

Even if it doesn’t pass, that’s one thing I’ll be looking at as a criterion.

What constitutes an event? Showing up at national and having a pow-wow with the big boys over drinks or what? Showing up at a bake sale by an LP group somewhere in the US?

I would say that any public event should qualify.

Also who will be in charge of gathering the information and from whom? How do we verify it? Do we always even have access to the candidates before the convention to ask them these questions?

I would think that the candidate in question would want such contact with the party “insiders” to be public knowledge, so the candidate would probably publicize that attendance. Thus it should be easily findable using a simple web search or two.

If it comes into question, then the burden of proof should be on that candidate’s supporters, in my opinion.

I think if the majority of the caucus wants to endorse a presidential candidate, that should honestly be purging or hurdles necessary.

Shouldn’t we want people who are involved in the party more than a month before the nomination?

Nominating people who can’t be bothered to show up until nomination weekend is a recipe for disaster.

Seriously — if someone can’t be bothered to attend two (2) LP events somewhere in the United States within a year, chances are that they’re not a serious candidate for a nationwide office.

  1. Interesting. I would add this:for LPNM to endorse a person running for national office from New Mexico, that candidate must have maintained a membership in LPNM for at least a year, and must show up to a New Mexico event before the nominating convention.

All candidates (whether from NM or not) should be accessible by phone, skype, or e-mail for questions by the delegates from New Mexico before the convention. These contacts must be personal, not y campaign staff. If a candidate cannot do this for delegates, he or she does not deserve an endorsement. No more drive-by candidates.
