STAIF-II — 16-18 April 2013, ABQ, NM

The Space Technology and Applications International Forum (STAIF) II

MCM Eleganté
2020 Menaul Blvd NE Albuquerque NM 87107
Tuesday, 16 April – Thursday, 18 April 2013

Announcing a science conference, STAIF II, to happen in Albuquerque on April 16-18, 2013. The conference will present peer-reviewed scientific papers on physics, exotic propulsion concepts, discoveries about Mars and the use of science to remediate problems here on Earth. The conference will be held at the MCM Eleganté. Senior, student and day rates will be available.

The purpose of this conference is to enable highly qualified scientists to present ideas that are far in advance of mainstream thinking.

This conference is intended to appeal to people who want to get off the planet. It’s not about not liking Earth; it’s about looking at the stars and feeling in your gut that we need to be there. We can get there. This conference is about making it happen.

Keep in mind Clarke’s Three Laws

  1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
  2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
  3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

About that third law – once you’ve got the concept of technology down, the notion of “magic” as some unexplainable, supernatural force can be put aside and the term relegated to stage shows in Las Vegas.

Some details –

Wayne Root, Traitor

That our Party is set in ways that might have worked 40 years ago.  The way Wayne was treated, shows how much of a little tent party we have today.  Now, who will the little tent libertarians, witch hunt?

Who will we witch-hunt, indeed?

The next LNCC Chair who uses the position as a tag-line for stumping for a non-libertarian candidate running against a duly nominated LP candidate, that’s who I for one will target.

Just like I did with Wayne Root recently.

The facts, as previously presented to the LNC and State Chairs:

  1. Wayne Root was a member-at-large of the LNC until 6 Sept 2012.
  2. Wayne Root was the Chair of the LNCC until 6 Sept 2012.
  3. Wayne Root was the Vice-Chair of the LPNV Executive Committee until 6 Sept 2012.
  4. From 18 June 2012 to 6 Sept 2012, while serving in those three positions, Wayne Root wrote a few articles, did a few TV and radio appearances in which he talked up Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan – both non-libertarian Republicans running for public office.
  5. From 18 June 2012 to 6 Sept 2012, Wayne Root used Facebook and Twitter to publicize his articles and media appearances stumping for Romney and Ryan.
  6. From 18 June 2012 to 6 Sept 2012, Wayne Root hardly said a word about Gary Johnson and Jim Gray – nominated Libertarian candidates for the same offices as Romney and Ryan.
  7. From 18 June 2012 to 6 Sept 2012, Wayne Root hardly said a word about Gary Johnson and Jim Gray on Facebook or Twitter.
  8. Both Gary Johnson and Jim Gray have demonstrated a much greater understanding of the Non-Aggression principle and how to apply that principle to the issues of the day than either Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan.

By stumping for Romney and Ryan while on the LP’s national leadership team after Johnson and Gray had been nominated, Wayne crossed the line, and he knew it.

I suspect that’s why he didn’t try to bluster his way out of this one, like he did back in April.

Here’s the pathetic part about all of this – Wayne’s supporters have yet to deny or dispute ANY of the points that I’ve reiterated above.

He has helped put the LP out on the frontlines.

How so?

Is the Libertarian Party supposed to be a viable organization on its own, or just a “farm team” for budding Republicans?

What’s the point of keeping it alive as an alternative to the GOP and Democrats if we’re going to put up with members of the national-level leadership team who use their affiliation with the LP as part of their biography blurb while they campaign for non-libertarians candidates running against the LP’s nominated candidates?

Now who do we have being a spokesperson for the LP?

Gary Johnson, Jim Gray, 500-plus others.

Spokespeople who behave as Root has in the past three months need to be shown the door.

Why does the LP need someone to go on TV who will tell the audience that they’re with the LP and then proceed to talk up Mittens?

I don’t get it.

If I had behaved as Root has recently – stumping for Romney and Ryan while ignoring Johnson and Gray, all under the LP name – I would EXPECT my Central Committee here to remove me for cause.

We know Wayne is a Salesman, Politician, Businessman, and Communications Expert.  What can we learn from this?  The next person that comes in will get treated the same way, if they attempt to communicate to the outside world.

What was he trying to sell in the last three months?

Mitt Romney as a libertarian?!

Apparently so.

Quite a few of us aren’t buying.

So when the Ron Paul and RLC Republicans were to have come to us from the GOP, all pissed off at being told “Go sit in the corner and shut up – but you BETTER be there to support us when we need it” by Reince Priebus and the RNC Gang on behalf of Romney, and they saw Root campaigning for Romney using the LP name, what then would they think of the LP?

Last night (9-13), one of those Ron Paul Republicans who was an alternate in Tampa came to our meetup here in Albuquerque – he told us that he didn’t even bother sticking around for the vote where Mittens was nominated, just walked out that Tuesday afternoon. He’s planning on voting for Johnson – what would he have said if he were to have seen Root on Fox News talking up Romney using the LP’s name?

Here’s a hint: it wouldn’t have been good.

How does that improve the LP?

It doesn’t.

Let’s face it – “Romney-tarianism” doesn’t sell well with LP members, or even among libertarian-leaning Republicans.

Hell, take a look at http://freerepublic.com – quite a few of the posters there (the ones who say that all we do is smoke dope and have intimate relations with pets, livestock and kids) have no use for Romney.

At last night’s meet-up, Jon Barrie, the IAP’s candidate for Senate was there – he told me that there really isn’t any defense for Root’s conduct. A week ago, Bobby Bridgewater, the IAP-NM State Chair, asked me “What the fuck’s up with Root?” Then he told me that if Root had done what he did while on the IAP’s national committee, they would have just given him the boot – “he would have been gone in an hour,” something to that effect.

For what it’s worth, Barrie told me he’s going to endorse Johnson, and told me a good bit of his campaign team are Johnson supporters.

Kind of funny – Barrie is campaigning as a conservative Christian, yet he was recommended to me by a long-time enthusiastic atheist and pot smoker.

I often wondered why do we try to keep Libertarianism a secret from the everyday people who matter.

Who’s this “we” you’re referring to here?

I’ve done my share of cable-access TV, written a few letters to the editor, been on the radio, spoke at rallies, that sort of thing.

NEVER once in my life as a member of the Libertarian Party, much less as a representative of the LP in any official capacity, have I EVER had the urge to campaign for the likes of Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan.

How does talking up Romney and Ryan do any good for the libertarian cause?

Anyway, Wayne was supposed to be our “branding” expert – he was the one who was going to put us in the “big leagues.”

To me, “branding” means differentiation from the competition – you don’t pitch RC Cola by going on TV and telling the audience how much you prefer Coke over Pepsi.

We have lack of leadership and direction in our national party.  People are afraid of change, and leadership with action.  We might actually become a major party.

Root’s kind of action is exactly what is NOT needed.

I don’t have any personal gripe with Root, but considering his behavior over the past three months – goodbye and good riddance.

I have come to the conclusion, that Libertarian is a philosophy that is stronger then party affiliation.

I tend to agree, but my sentiments along those lines take me in the direction of Jim Davidson and Tom Knapp.

The way our current party stands, we are our worst enemy.

How so?

Mark,

No, I think he was hounded out of the LP.  While he was in the LP I believe that he was positioned and deployed horrifically.  Part of that is his fault, part of it is ours.  All of the personal acrimony against him understandably left a bad taste in his mouth, he’s had enough, and he is taking what he believes to be the most viable course in light of that.  I don’t agree with him, but I don’t blame him.

I agree that Root was positioned and deployed horrifically.

Where we disagree about is what should have been his proper position and deployment.

To be sure, for better AND for worse, Wayne is Wayne.  He’s not perfect, and he’s not a 100% Libertarian (few are).  But he was an awesome bridge to millions of people who might have otherwise investigated the LP because of the credibility he enjoys as a media figure.

I’m not perfect, either, but at least I’m not willing to hose all over the Non-Aggression Principle (what we’re supposed to be all about in the LP) just to make a few brownie points with Hannity.

IMHO, we have missed a great opportunity.

Exactly which opportunity was that?

    @kaitlove__xx –

completely undecided on major issues and alternate between one stance to the complete opposite

I’m completely confused upon sort of “logic” is required to come to this conclusion.

@TheTheologiansCafe – Exactly how are “most libertarians on xanga” “just contrary to what everyone else thinks” ?

What does “everyone else think” ?

What would constitute a “suitable” example of a libertarian?

@SerenaDante – Wayne Allyn Root would agree with you in his own way – he finally took the hint four days ago. Now he can stump for Romney all he wants for all I care, because he won’t be using the LP’s name to do it.

  2. Re: What is A Libertarian?

Anyway, Serena, you asked the question

“Why in the world would I vote for someone calling themselves Libertarian when it’s pretty much a crapshoot what policies and ideologies they will and will not support?”

Try reading Down With Power by L. Neil Smith, who is also the publisher and senior columnist at The Libertarian Enterprise. The Probability Broach is another way to look at it (in a fictional format).

If this seems confusing, it’s clear as hard vacuum when compared to the mess offered by “liberal” Democrats and “conservative” Republicans – they often can’t be bothered to follow the platforms and party rules that they fight and argue over at their conventions. The Mitt-vs-Barack back-and-forth has the same relationship to real issues as the WWE has to genuine athletics – it’s all really just for show.

  3. Re: Democrat Delegate Says She Would Like to Kill Romney if She Sees Him

    (d) A cage fight like seen on the WWE pay-per-view shows.

In truth, that’s what we’re being offered the rhetorical version of with this Mittens-vs-The-Barack contest. And just like the WWE specials, it’s all just for show.

At least with the UFC events, there’s a genuine fight going on – just like the Black Romney and White Obama would have if Gary Johnson were included in the debates.

  4. Re: What is A Libertarian?

@PocketfulOfDreams – You’re basically right – a more formal way to say this is the Non-Aggression Principle that I linked to above.

The core of libertarian thought is what we call the Non-Aggression Principle

A libertarian is someone who believes that no human being has the right – under any circumstances – to initiate force or fraud against another human being, nor to threaten or delegate its initiation.

Follow this link for examples on how to apply this principle to policy questions.

  1. Re: Romney-Biden ticket?

No better or worse than a potential Obama-Ryan team-up – either way, spending increases, deficits increase, the national debt gets worse, the feds stick their noses, hands, fingers and other appendages into our bodies, wallets, bedrooms, cars, gun cabinets, refrigerators, bank accounts, computers, cell phone, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

So go on voting for the likes of Obama, Romney, Biden, Ryan, Wilson and Heinrich. Either way, you lose more and more freedom and pay more and more for them to run your lives for you.

I for one am voting for Gary Johnson and Jon Barrie.

  2. Re: Democrat Delegate Says She Would Like to Kill Romney if She Sees Him

This is simply an internal problem for the Boot On Your Neck Party. I’m sure Reichschancellor Obama and Peoples’ Commissar-Intendent Romney can work this out between themselves behind the scenes.

  3. Re: Democrat Delegate Says She Would Like to Kill Romney if She Sees Him

My simple solution to all of this BS is that the Demoncrap and Repuklican wings of the Boot On Your Neck Party should all get together in the same football stadium at the same time, brawl it out good and hard, and whoever remains standing at the end of the week are the BOYN candidates.

And for those who take a beating in the process, at least they get a taste of what they advocate does to the rest of us. Serves ’em right.

  4. Re: The Day I Almost Served as a Juror

I doubt that I would ever actually end up in the jury box as a juror or as an alternate – I’m too much of what all of the lawyers involved don’t want there.

I did receive a jury summons late last year (23 Dec 2011), but I was never actually called as a juror. My questionnaire answers

  5. Posted to the LP Radical Caucus Facebook group

I wouldn’t say just yet that he’s out of the LP for good.

Not til I see his obituary in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

In the words of his personal hero (Reagan), “trust but verify.”

Maybe we can ask Root to ask his GOP buddies to lay off the bogus lawsuits against our ballot access

I think it’s incumbent on Root to provide documentation of his lobbying towards the GOP on this issue.

  2. [IPR] August 2012 Open Thread

For what it’s worth, while I still subscribe to the BTP platform, everybody but me here in New Mexico that could discern the difference between the BTP and the other Tea Party simply wasn’t interested in joining the BTP.

  3. [IPR] September 2012 Open Thread

Ogle should link up with Milnes and form the Progressive-Libertarian Independent Multipartisan Coalition Parliamentary Party.

    Yep.

    That’s a sure-fire way to beat the Obama-Romney ticket.
