It turned out to be landing on the athletics field attached to St. Charles Elementary School, right next door to us.
It was a UH-60 Black Hawk, painted dark green. The NMANG (I guess – it looked like they were wearing Army ACUs) apparently flew it there so they could show it off to the kids, who were assembled outside.
The funny thing was, I didn’t even hear it until it was right on top of us – it was hovering about 50 – 60 feet off the ground, waiting to land, when I exited the classroom-cum-lab where I was working.
Definitely a “Kodak moment” – I had left my Sony Cybershot at home, and my cell phone wasn’t charged. Otherwise, I’d have pictures of my former comrades-in-arms hovering overhead, and with the chopper parked in the schoolyard.
